This April 22nd the world will celebrate Earth Day. But let’s keep it real, every day should be Earth Day. Being eco-conscious in our everyday lives truly impacts our environment and makes our world a better place for us and future generations to come. Every decision, big or small, makes a huge impact in keeping our world green. From biking, planting flowers and trees, recycling and reusing water bottles, all these small steps can leave a lasting impression with Mother Nature.
One decision that can impact not only our environment but also our own health is to choose natural skincare products.
Most skincare products on the market today have harsh, synthetic chemicals and harmful ingredients. Approximately 60% of what we apply to our skin can be absorbed into our bloodstream. Studies have found that our nervous systems, moods, immune systems and reproductive systems can be affected by harsh body care and beauty products. Common ingredients like aluminum have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease and even breast cancer. Regardless of what skincare products you use in your daily routine, you are going to wash them off eventually. So, what are you washing down the sink? Are you washing away natural ingredients or harmful chemicals back into the ecosystem?
One very popular ingredient used to exfoliate skin are microbeads. Microbeads are tiny plastic balls used in skincare products such as face and body scrubs. These tiny microbeads are so small they bypass sewage treatment plants and end up washing into canals, rivers, lakes and our oceans, wreaking havoc on our environment. It can be really challenging to purchase products that have truly natural ingredients. Always read the ingredients on a product you’re considering buying even when it reads, “natural”.
It’s important to avoid these ingredients in skincare and body products.
- Triclosan
- BHA
- Parabens
- DEA, MEA and TEA
- Propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol
- Petrochemicals
- Sulfates
- Talc
- Synthetic dyes
- Microbeads
There are natural alternatives that you can try at home. Many of us use various conditioners for our hair to make it soft, shiny and manageable. Using a natural combination of milk and lemon on our hair as conditioner will keep your hair silky while nourishing your scalp for a healthier head of hair. Apple cider vinegar is a great natural alternative for skin toner. Vinegar helps tighten, brighten and freshens the skin while treating dry skin and preventing and treating breakouts. Using our Sweet Orange and Coffee Exfoliant Soap and our Lemon and Cranberry Seed Soap are excellent, natural exfoliants you can use on your skin that have coffee grinds and cranberry seeds to help exfoliate skin while avoiding harmful microbeads.
When given the opportunity, opt for products that have natural ingredients so you’re not introducing anything harmful to your body and to our environment.
Handmade using the finest natural plant essential oils and fruit extracts, we are proud to say that our soaps deliver radiant skin and evoke joyful emotions in a clean and effective way all while keeping our environment safe.
